What Is PET Preform Molding?
PET preform molding is a specialized injection molding process that produces the hollow, test-tube-shaped PET preforms used in stretch blow molding to manufacture PET bottles, containers, medical blood tubes, and bottle caps. The dimensional precision and material quality of each preform directly determine the clarity, wall thickness distribution, and structural integrity of the finished bottle — making it one of the most quality-critical steps in the beverage and packaging supply chain.
Modern high-speed multi-cavity PET preform molds produce hundreds of preforms per minute. At this throughput, even minor inconsistencies in material preparation or cooling performance propagate rapidly across millions of units, making auxiliary equipment stability non-negotiable.
Key Challenges in PET Preform Production
- ● Material moisture control
PET is highly hygroscopic. Moisture above 50ppm at the barrel entry causes IV value (intrinsic viscosity) degradation,
producing hazy, brittle preforms with elevated acetaldehyde content — a critical quality failure for food-contact bottles.
- ● Mold condensation
In humid climates or temperature-controlled production halls, cold molds cycling at high speed attract surface condensation,
causing cosmetic defects on preform surfaces and risking corrosion on precision mold components.
- ● Cooling cycle efficiency
Preform cycle times are largely governed by mold cooling time. Inconsistent chilled water temperature extends cooling
and adds seconds per cycle — at millions of shots annually, even one second per cycle represents enormous commercial impact.
- ● Colorant accuracy
Even small masterbatch dosing variations produce visible color deviation across preform batches,
triggering downstream rejection at the bottle plant or brand owner level.
Flying Tiger KJ's PET Preform Molding Solution
Flying Tiger KJ provides a fully integrated auxiliary package developed specifically for high-speed PET preform production.
- ● Dehumidifying Dryer
For material drying, our proprietary Vacuum Dehumidifying Dryer is the most efficient choice for PET. Operating at
a vacuum degree below 1 Torr, it reduces water evaporation temperature to below room temperature, achieving
thorough drying to under 50ppm in just 1–2 hours — more than 50% faster than conventional adsorption dehumidifying systems
— while consuming over 30% less energy.
For plants preferring conventional dehumidification, the Three-In-One Dehumidifying Dryer integrates drying, conveying,
and temperature control in a compact footprint, providing a proven and reliable alternative.
- ● Mold Dehumidifier
Continuously supplies dry air to mold surfaces throughout production, eliminating condensation in humid environments
and protecting precision mold components from corrosion.
- ● Inverter Air Cooling Chiller
Equipped with variable-frequency drive (VFD) compressor control — delivers stable,
precisely temperature-controlled chilled water to mold cooling circuits
with 30–50% energy savings versus fixed-speed systems, directly shortening cycle times and maximizing daily output.
- ● Weight Master Batch Doser
Ensures highly accurate, continuous colorant dosing with real-time gravimetric feedback,
eliminating batch-to-batch color variation across all preform cavities.
